England v India First ODI Preview: Tourists Look to Avoid More Misery

England leapfrogged India and claimed their place at the top of the Test rankings recently, so the next target is to match them when them when it comes to the shorter form of the game.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team, after all, are the global champions in the 50-over format following their World Cup victory in April when they won on their own turf.

During the tournament they were involved in a thrilling tied match with England when Andrew Strauss notched 158, although it is Alastair Cook in charge now and Strauss will be concentrating on Test cricket.

But that result shows there is not much between the teams if they play to their potential. At the moment the momentum appears to be with the hosts after their whitewash in the Test series.

They also defeated the tourists in a one-off Twenty 20 match when India looked in a decent position to win beforeJade Dernbach and Eoin Morgan led the comeback.

England will be without Kevin Pietersen after the decision was made to rest the batsman for the series, with Ben Stokes called into the squad to cover.
